DIY Concrete Drilling: It's Not Worth The Risks

Concrete drilling involves much more than taking a drill to the pavement and watching it work. In fact, the process is far more precise, and as a result, comes along with a long list of potential hazards and mistakes. For this reason, it's not recommended that any person without the right level of experience drill on their own. However, if you're not convinced that drilling on your own isn't a good idea, there is plenty of information to help you see otherwise.

Poor Surface Evaluation

Before the drilling process beings, you must assess the surface of the concrete. If you fail to do so, an injury is often just around the corner. It's essential the surface be inspected to identify the location of any rebar or other hard structural pieces. If the drilling tool comes in contact with these structures, it will cause a sensation known as kickback. Kickback, in essence, forces the tool back into the direction of the operator. Depending on the level of power used, kickback can result in serious injuries.

Equipment Damage

Even if you are able to avoid injury from kickback, you should anticipate some damage to the drill itself. More than likely you're renting the drill, so any damage you cause will also likely be your responsibility to cover. As a result, not only is your project halted, but you will also have to pay increased damaged costs.

Failing to Assess Weak Spots

Sometimes concrete drilling does not call for the complete destruction of a concrete slab, but if you don't know what you're doing, destruction is what you should expect. If you fail to locate any weak areas in the concrete beforehand, as soon as the drill hits the pavement it can create a sense of shakiness that can cause the weak areas of the concrete to crack almost immediately. A project that was intended to cover a small area, can quickly turn into a massive project.

Concrete Dust Hazards

Dust is never good for your health, but concrete dust can be especially hazardous. In addition to immediate breathing concerns, the dust can lead to long-term health risks. Unfortunately, wearing a face mask isn't enough to protect yourself from the dust, as other preventive and ventilation processes must be applied. However, most people don't know this, and as a result, they unknowingly expose themselves to danger.

Don't jeopardize the integrity of your project or your safety by performing concrete drilling services on your own. Always enlist a professional, such as from A & B Concrete Coring Company, for the best results.

Use Concrete as a Form of Art

Concrete doesn't have to be boring. In fact it can be absolutely beautiful. My name is Andrea Reese, and I am an artist as well as an avid gardener. I enjoy sculpting and decided to try to combine my two passions to create an incredible backyard oasis. The results are incredible. In this blog, I'll show you how I learned to make small sculptures and etchings in walkways to turn what used to be ordinary concrete into something amazing that adds tremendous artistic flair to the beauty of my garden. You can make visitors to your backyard think they've stepped into a fairy land. I can show you how.
