Concrete Patio Maintenance Tips

Concrete is very durable and looks beautiful used on patios or around pools. You don't have to worry about it rotting away as you do with wooden decks or patios. Concrete does need to be maintained though in order to preserve that beauty. See below for some concrete maintenance tips.

Clean It Often

Clean your concrete often by sweeping debris off of it that can potentially stain the surface. Concrete is very porous, and therefore, it can stain easily. Mow away from your concrete to keep grass clippings from invading your concrete and attempting to grow into tiny crevices, which can crack and damage your concrete over time. Use a broom to sweep your concrete, or use a leaf blower to clean it. If there is a spill on your concrete, clean it up immediately with a garden hose and dish detergent, and if you spot a stain, remove it with a soft bristle brush and detergent.

Seal Your Concrete

Apply a sealer to your concrete to keep it looking like new and to protect the surface. Sealer is important if you have stained concrete, as it will help hold in the color and prevent it from fading. Concrete sealer can be found at your local hardware store. Apply it according to the manufacturer's directions with a long-handled squeegee after cleaning it thoroughly. Apply it evenly throughout your concrete, paying special attention to the edges, where cracking and stains can happen easily. Allow the sealer to cure for at least 24 hours, and block off the concrete so no one walks across it. Concrete sealer should be applied at least every other year.

Other Concrete Tips:

  • Never use harsh rock salt to de-ice your concrete in winter months. Only use sand, as salt can breakdown your concrete, causing it to crack or crumble.
  • Keep grease, oil and paint off of your concrete, as all of these can easily stain your concrete and be difficult to remove.
  • Concrete can be slippery when wet, so if you have concrete around your swimming pool, make sure nobody runs to help prevent accidents.

Concrete is a durable material, which makes it great for sidewalks, driveways and patios. Take good care of it to ensure it looks beautiful year after year without cracking or crumbling. Use Concrete as a Form of Art

Concrete doesn't have to be boring. In fact it can be absolutely beautiful. My name is Andrea Reese, and I am an artist as well as an avid gardener. I enjoy sculpting and decided to try to combine my two passions to create an incredible backyard oasis. The results are incredible. In this blog, I'll show you how I learned to make small sculptures and etchings in walkways to turn what used to be ordinary concrete into something amazing that adds tremendous artistic flair to the beauty of my garden. You can make visitors to your backyard think they've stepped into a fairy land. I can show you how.
